Since spring 2016, the Muscatine County Arts Council has been honoring local poets through its Wandering Words program. This unique initiative celebrates the power of poetry by bringing it to life on the city’s sidewalks.
How It Works:
- Annual Poetry Contest: Each April, in conjunction with National Poetry Month, the Arts Council hosts its Wandering Words Poetry Contest. Poets from the community submit their heartfelt verses, sharing their perspectives, emotions, and stories.
- Judging and Selection: The submitted poems undergo careful evaluation by seasoned judges.
- Sidewalk Engravings: The winning poems were etched into the city’s sidewalks by the skilled hands of Jeff Hargrave from J & D Stones or Noah and Payton Kelley from Kelley’s Stone Engraving of Cedar Rapids. These permanent installations transform ordinary walkways into literary pathways, inviting passersby to pause, reflect, and connect with the written word.
- Growing Collection: Over the years, the Wandering Words program has adorned Muscatine’s sidewalks with an array of poetic voices. From haikus to sonnets, from contemplative musings to vivid imagery, these verses weave a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences.
Community Engagement:
- Accessible Art: By placing poetry where people walk, the Arts Council ensures that art is accessible to all. Whether you’re on your way to work, strolling through the park, or simply enjoying the outdoors, you’ll encounter these literary gems.
- Searchable Directory: The Arts Council is diligently creating a searchable online map and directory of all the poems etched in concrete throughout the city. Soon, you’ll be able to explore the entire collection and discover the hidden verses beneath your feet.
Join the Journey: As you wander Muscatine’s streets, keep an eye out for these poetic surprises. Let the words guide you, inspire you, and remind you that beauty resides not only in grand galleries but also in the everyday corners of our lives.
